The Alexander Technique

Lessons in Windlesham, Surrey with Quintin Norris MSTAT LLAM

The Alexander Technique teaches the skilful "use of the self": how we move, how we breathe, how we learn, how we organise our awareness and focus of attention and, above all, how we choose our reactions in increasingly demanding situations.

It follows therefore that the Alexander Technique can have a positive effect on a wide range of stresses and ailments, including back, neck or shoulder pain and other muscular/skeletal problems, headaches, RSI, breathing difficulties, sports and performance strain, stress related conditions, anxiety and depression; as well as enhancing performance, improving vitality and general wellbeing.

A Technique for Living and a Technique for Life

There have been many words written about the Alexander Technique, but most people (including me when I first started years ago) find that these only really make sense when they experience it! But in essence, the Alexander Technique is a technique that teaches us how to use our body in a more efficient and healthier way. It is taught individually and anyone can learn it.

The Alexander Technique is a method of mental and physical re-education. It is concerned with thinking as well as activity, and it teaches us how to ‘use’ ourselves to best advantage in all our daily activity. It is widely recognised as an effective means of alleviating or preventing back and other muscular-skeletal pain and many other disorders.

Alexander Technique Lesson Surrey

So often we build up unnecessary habits of muscular tension over the years. We are usually unaware of these until they cause us pain and discomfort, but every day they are stopping us moving in an effortless and dynamic way and fulfilling our true potential. The Alexander Technique helps us recognise and prevent these unnecessary tensions.

We learn to stand easily at our full height. This leads to good posture, freedom of movement, easy breathing, confidence and general well-being. And when this happens we find that our back pain, neck pain, general stiffness and other disorders are relieved. It helps us to feel calmer and think more clearly.

It is a tool for life.

Testimonials

Anyone who has suffered chronic back pain knows how depressing it can be over the years, with very little long term respite from traditional medicine and therapeutic methods. It seems obvious now that the way I move and think and 'use' myself would be the key to improvement, but one clearly needs to have the experience and be 'shown the way', so to speak. My back feels looser, almost always pain-free, I feel taller, more balanced and co-ordinated. Lessons with Quintin and applying the principles of the Technique in my everyday life are now a constant and essential part of my life.

I came to the Alexander Technique in desperation with raging indigestion, it made my life a misery and, after numerous faddish food diets and extensive tests, my consultant suggested that my posture and stress might be the problem.

After several months of Alexander lessons, I had ceased taking all prescription antacid drugs, was able to eat what I liked and started to have a normal life for the first time in years. I was able to sleep uninterrupted too. I have come to understand the years of misuse I have unknowingly imposed on my poor body. The Technique is not a therapy but a way of life, self help if you like.

Quintin is a natural teacher and his huge enthusiasm, knowledge and energy are addictive!

Comparing myself now to when I started having lessons with Quintin a couple of years ago always brings a smile to my face and a flood of relief. I came to lessons suffering debilitating anxiety and panic attacks. I had daily chest pains, digestive problems and vertigo. These have all but disappeared. If I had to describe it I'd say that it feels like my previously troublesome muscles and internal organs have been given the room they need to function properly. The Technique gives you a certain security and a direction to go in to deal with what comes your way. Lessons are an integral part of my week now. It's a fascinating journey. And it's fun!

As a professional artist I have found that the Technique has enabled me to listen to my body when painting, whether standing at my easel or sitting at my desk painting smaller works. I can give my Alexander directions, as taught to me by my teacher - this frees my neck of muscular tension and I get a definite sense of moving myself forward and up, where I am definitely at my best. It also gives me the freedom to stop, if only for a few moments, and return afresh to painting. That's a wonderful feeling!

Quintin has a genuine love of people and lives for the Technique, and I always look forward to my lessons.

After years of suffering with neckache, visiting chiropractors and osteopaths, a friend recommended the Alexander Technique. Within a few months of lessons with Quintin my neckache had gone. I have also benefitted in many other ways, particularly in my ability to deal with stress.

Any doubts or scepticism I may have had with regard to the Alexander Technique were soon dispelled within a few lessons under Quintin's care. After several years of attending his lessons, the Technique has proved both curative and preventative as a viable solution to the back problems I have experienced for a considerable time.

As a musician, pain and weariness were begining to have a serious effect on my ability to play. With the Alexander Technique I am able to play for longer, with more ease, and my performance seems better all round somehow. Both my colleagues and audience have noticed...
